Drywall screws are specialty fasteners with distinct qualities that improve their performance and usability that are used to secure drywall panels to structural structures.

Features of drywall screws include either coarse or fine threads for wood or metal studs, a bugle head for a flush finish, and a sharp or self-drilling tip for quick penetration. These characteristics, together with a particular drive type like Phillips, guarantee a safe and easy drywall installation.

Drywall screws are commonly used in both residential and commercial construction.

1. Wood/Metal Framing:

  • Fine Thread:  which have a smaller pitch and are designed to grip the wood without splitting it.

  • Self-Tapping: which have a sharp point and a thread that can cut into the metal without the need for pre-drilling.

2. Ceiling Applications:

Longer screws are used for ceilings to guarantee a firm grip.

3. Specialty Applications:

To preserve the integrity of fire-rated walls and ceilings, use specific fire-rated drywall screws.

Use corrosion-resistant screws to avoid rust and guarantee longevity in places with high humidity or moisture.

4. Special Tool:

A drywall screw gun allows for precise and efficient installation of screws.

5. Finishing:

Screws should be slightly recessed for the application of joint compound (mud) to cover the screw heads and create a smooth, seamless finish. After the screws are in place, the joints and screw heads are covered with joint tape and several layers of joint compound, which is then sanded to a smooth finish.

Materials and Processing:

Steel, stainless steel, and zinc or phosphate coatings that improve corrosion resistance are common materials.

Common surface treatments such as Dacromet, phosphating, blackening, soap phosphating, and galvanizing.

Bugle head: The cone-shaped head countersinks into the drywall to create a smooth finish that is ready for paint and mud without damaging the paper surface.

Point: The majority of drywall screws may pierce the drywall and framing material without the need for pre-drilling because they have a sharp or self-drilling point.

Type of thread:

Coarse threads:  with wider spacing and designed for attaching drywall to wood studs, providing a strong hold.

Fine threads: These are perfect for attaching drywall to metal studs because of their closer spacing.

Drive type: The most popular drive is a #2 Phillips recess, which is compatible with drill and screwdrivers.

Coating: To prevent corrosion, many drywall screws contain a phosphate coating.
